We are sad to announce that Larry Gordon, co-founder of G&S Surfboards, died on January 1, 2016. We were very fortunate to interview Larry and have him open up about the story behind the start of G&S surfboards.
Ken Lewis of Kelpfire wrote the following reflection:
“There is not a more iconic brand in the surf world than G&S. Period. While the brand has had many different looks, distributors and directions since the early 90’s, the brand set the tone for success and craftsmanship from the 1950’s-1990’s. Future legends like Skip Frye got their start in the halls of the G&S factory, in fact, the tree of talent is second to none. Hynson, Frye, Preisendorfer, BK, Neil Norris, PT, Ian Cairns, Butch Van Artsdalen, Billy Hamilton, Midget Farrelly, Morey, Keating, Staples, Borderi, Bouche, Cody, Seebold, Eaton, Hank Warner and countless others bore fruit after working, shaping, producing and surfing for G&S.
Larry’s memory will live on forever in every board that bears his logo and from every shaper that got their start working for him. The reach Larry Gordon had in our industry is the stuff of legend, but the character of the man surpasses the word more than you would ever believe.”
